About this deal

HD Viewing: Cutting-edge DLP technology projects a vividly-detailed 720p, 200-ANSI-lumen image up to 100 inches big. Ideal for use in low-light environments. The Nebula Capsule II is not a bad projector. It isn’t buggy, nor is it missing any significant features. It isn’t horribly imbalanced for picture and sound and we can imagine relaxing into a perfectly good mini cinema experience on the go with it. But it’s simply too expensive and much better picture performance is available at the same price from the likes of the Nebula Mars II and Nebula Solar Portable. The Max is also better in terms of screen mirroring features, superior RAM and ROM specs, Octacore Processor, and battery life/video playtime. The improved speakers are also excellent, although I would not mind an even greater increase in volume output. Overall, the speakers have excellent clarity and sound quality, however.

As with most portable projectors, the Anker Nebula Capsule II has a side hustle as a Bluetooth speaker and it will just about out-perform a mobile phone. This isn’t going to be for you if you want a projector you can use any time of the day, it just isn’t powerful enough to overcome natural light. In the dark it’s fantastic, but during the day, forget it. To a degree all portable projectors are small but the Nebula Capsule Max is tiny, standing just 15cm tall, with an 80mm diameter, the projector is smaller than most Bluetooth speakers. And, weighing just 737g, it’s also lighter than a lot of Bluetooth speakers, too. The contrast ratio is how well your projector manages light and dark images on-screen, highlighting the difference between shadows and bright lights together so you get that sharpness in your shows. You want this ratio to be as wide as possible so you don’t lose clarity if you move it out of a dark room. The quality of the lamp will affect the contrast ratio, and in most cases, it will be fine to enjoy movies outdoors in everything but direct sunlight or perhaps an evening movie as the sun fades.Things look smoother at standard definition as we watch Minority Report on DVD, even as Tom Cruise waves his arms about at the famous gesture UI. The details on the actor’s face are quite impressive too –his stubble is clear and there are no distracting artefacts. The lamp offers a service life of 30,000 hours, but after those it’s hard to see it being replaceable – at least easily. But to put this number in perspective, if we were to use the projector for 24 hours a day it would be roughly three and a half years of constant usage; with eight hours a day of use it would be more than ten years. I guess that’s plenty of time. The Nebula Capsule Max has a projector capable of displaying images at 200 ANSI lumens with a max picture size of 100 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720. The throw ratio is as follows: The only things that the Capsule II does better than the Max are its more robust USB-C capabilities that allow you to hook up a USB-C power bank and its Android TV 9.0 operating system that supports 5,000 apps. Alas applications such as Netflix and Prime Video are not usable without the companion app for smartphones, Nebula Connect: this is available for both Android and iOS and allows to control the projector with both a remote-like and a mouse-like control system. A pop-up appears when you open these apps recommending you to use the smartphone control. The nebula Connect app connects fairly easily and fast to the projector, so it’s easy to set up the connection and start watching content.

Travel Tech We’ve tested out dozens of products over the last few years to bring you review of gadgets to take on the move. Although the Nebula Capsule Max offers a “speaker mode”, which allows one to use it as a speaker, it offers limited audio quality: bass is neither powerful nor very deep and there’s definitely a “boxy” ring to it. Voices have decent enough timbre and there’s good clarity even in action films. Using an external speaker, even a small and portable one such as the SoundCore Flare+ or the Creative iRoar Go, delivers much better results than using the embedded one. That’s absolutely understandable though, and the Capsule Max is indeed decent for watching films. It can be charged off of a regular power bank through USB-C. We recommend using the Anker charger but it works fine with other USB-C power banks. And software is where the Max and Capsule II really diverge. The Android TV software in the Capsule II is the same one you’ll see in the NVIDIA Shield, a number of smart TVs. And since the Capsule II came out, there are a couple of projector manufacturers that are either already using Android TV, or have plans to use them.

Are portable mini projectors worth it?

While all of this sounds reasonable, it’s worth noting that the Anker Nebula Capsule II costs pretty much the same as both the Nebula Solar Portable and the Nebula Mars II Pro portable projectors. These two other machines have similar features but offer far more in the way of luminance (400 and 500 ANSI-lumens respectively). On top of that, the Mars II’s sound system is even beefier (2x 10W) and the resolution on the Solar goes up to Full HD with HDR and support for 4K inputs. In the end it’s quite a good setup which will be supported for many years, as Android 8.1 won’t be EOL’d for at least four years, so it should continue to be compatible with app updates. Picture & Sound Quality Included in the box is a remote (powered by 2 batteries, also included), power cable and a getting started guide. Setup And certain apps on the Capsule Max’s software such as Plex or Hulu had a gauzy overlay on the picture. That supports my general rule of thumb with portable projectors: you get what you pay for. Liner Notes: Is the Nebula tripod worth it?

The Nebula Capsule Max uses Android 8.1 Oreo with a custom skin on top called “Nebula UI”. This UI makes it possible to use Android without a touchscreen as it is designed to be used with the remote. It works quite well as it’s intuitive and well laid out. On the bottom of the projector is a tripod thread, giving additional options for either mounting onto a tripod or for ceiling mounting. The options allow you to invert and flip the image, this can even be used to rear project onto a screen. Tech Specs These are all fair trade-offs, but on the darker mode it means that you really need a darker room to watch in or you have to put up with a smaller picture. It takes a second to move the cursor on your MacBook when using screen mirroring and a device like the iPhone 10 often crashes and requires tedious reconnection that takes about 10 seconds, even when doing something as simple as changing the volume. The Nebula Capsule Max bears a lot of similarities to its masterful sibling, the Nebula Capsule II .
