Description

Similar to the chipping drill above, this putting drill tests your speed control and places pressure on you to hit each putt closer than the previous putt. Our 10th and final short game drill is a high volume rep drill to build your putting skills from 6 feet and in since this is a critical distance you’ll face often. The most important aspect of chipping (besides choosing the right club) is to make sure that the left wrist (or right wrist for left-handed golfers) does not break down during the chipping motion. The moment the wrist breaks down two things happen:

Measure out distances of 30 feet, 40 feet, 50 feet, 60 feet, and 70 feet from a hole of your choice on the practice green. For each of the chip you make try to make the ball come to rest within 3 feet of the hole, or within gimme range. These formulas are based on a normal-paced, level green (a situation we don't often find on the course), so if you are going uphill you would need to go up one club, and downhill requires going down one club. If the green is fast, you again will need to go down one club and if the green is slow you will go up one club. I know this may sound confusing at first, but once you understand the basic formula, it really is just common sense. There are plenty of options when it comes to calibrating your distances. My preferred method is to learn one basic stroke size that you are really comfortable with, and to simply change the club. This will alter the distance due to changing flight-to-roll ratios. When you chip with an 8-iron the ball will fly one-third of the distance to the hole and roll two-thirds.

Relilac’s tri-turf hitting mat is an ideal option to help you practice our chipping golf tips. The tri-turf gives you the option of hitting off the artificial turf equivalent of the fairway, rough and green. This enables you to hone chipping skills from various lies at an affordable price. This is a classic putting drill to build up your skills from all angles around the hole as well as build your mental toughness to perform under pressure. According to Golf.com , the Rule of 12 is an easy way to determine which club to use. In other words, if the ball needs to fly further than it rolls, then you want to hit a weaker lofted club, like a sand wedge or lob wedge. An alternative option is the Wosofe Golf Mat . It also offers three artificial turf types in one. What Is The Rule Of 12 In Chipping? Lots of club golfers will practice with a different ball to the one they play with - but this makes it difficult to develop a consistent feel around the greens.

Around the practice area, select 9 different chipping locations and pins/targets on the green. If playing with a partner or group, alternate who chooses the location. This chipping location becomes the “hole,” each with a par of 2. The object of the game is simple, complete the hole (chipping up and putting out) in as few strokes as possible, direct practice for getting up-and-down out on the course. With this chipping drill you will train yourself to really aim for your chip shots to come to rest really close to the hole. So close that converting your par through a one-putt becomes a formality. Depending on the lie conditions and many other factors the best course of action oftentimes is to see the ball make just the hop necessary to clear the rough so that it lands on the putting green and starts rolling from there.Notice how drastically easier it is to convert your ‘par’ when the ball is within gimme range. Aim to reward yourself with such a small putt distance every time you chip when you are playing on the course. Letting your wrists hinge slightly will increase the loft and distance of your shots, sending the ball a little higher and rolling nicely after landing.

In this video , Top 100 teacher Eric Johnson provides an example of the rule. He counts the paces from his ball to his target landing zone and onto the cup. He calculates 4 paces for flight and 12-paces for roll. When you have left yourself a few yards from the green, you probably want to chip the ball towards the hole. The chip is a short stroke designed to bounce and gently roll toward the hole.

Try to beat your score each time to add a little pressure to your game. The best score you can get is 9 if you one putt everything and the average score is 18 if you 2 putt everything. So try to get 18 your first time playing this game and then work down from there aiming for 17, 16, 15, and so on. Then reverse it by chipping to the far hole, then the middle hole, then the closest hole and making all 3 up and downs in a row. By the way, we call this this 6-8-10 Formula because the formula involves the 6-iron, 8-iron and pitching wedge, and the pitching can technically be called a 10-iron.) This short game drill can take 10 minutes or it could take an hour! You could even make an entire golf practice session out of it. Take three balls with you and drop them in the rough just off the practice putting green so that they have a similar lie and distance from the hole.

Hold the club in your hands making sure the shaft of the club is off to your left side without touching your body. The problems associated with hinging and releasing your wrists as you come towards impact is that you need to get the timing absolutely right or else the ball will shoot across the putting surface or your club will strike the ground first. Usually, “yips” with chipping are caused by the lead arm stopping on the follow-through while the trailing arm keeps moving, breaking the lower-case y position discussed before and flipping the club through impact. To get over this, take a few practice swings before your chip, but as you start your downswing, allow your trailing hand to come off the club (right hand for right-handed golfers and vice versa) and keep your left arm moving through. Without your right hand on the club, you physically can’t flip the clubhead with it, allowing for a simple swing thought to keep the left arm moving. Hit some chip shots with the aim of seeing the ball landing on the new target and rolling the rest of the way towards the flag. Roughly speaking, shots hit with a 7-iron should spend some 20% of its distance in the air and 80% rolling. Like Par 18, this game will use nine different shot locations around the practice green. Grab a high-loft option (lob/sand wedge), a mid-loft option (PW/9 iron), and a low-loft option (8/7 iron or even something like a hybrid for low bump and runs). Hit one ball each from the same shot location, and whichever club finishes closest to the target wins the hole. Try different lengths and situations (clearing an obstacle, short-sided, etc.), and this game will help you master a variety of shot types you can then take out on the course instead of relying on just one club every time. Prizes for the club that wins are optional. Bonus Section: Padraig Harrington’s Guide to Chipping

However, you need to employ the correct chipping technique to be successful. Which I will talk you through below. 1) Loosen Your Grip In our post on the Best Indoor Golf Net , we found the Spornia Pop Up golf chipping net to be the best in this category. It is affordable, adjustable, and features three target areas. You can set it up indoors or outdoors in your yard, leaving you with no excuse not to practice. What Are The Best Golf Chipping Mats? Make sure you’re moving around each time to different holes and different distances away from the edge of the green. The goal would be to get all 5 putts within 4 feet or less of the hole, leaving yourself easy tap in putts. Beat the Previous Lag Putt Drill
