To test how good the camera was, I captured some test footage at different times. The camera’s 130-degree field of view is capable of capturing video at a 2K resolution, which meant that it could easily cover most of my garden easily. On the plus side, the video is great and night vision is also great. Connecting to the camera for live view or recorded view is usually a second or two but occasionally fails or takes longer.

For the most part, you’ll want the Eufy SoloCam S40 to run automatically to capture video, and for this you’ll need to set up motion detection. Out of the box, I didn’t find the camera sensitive enough: it would trigger an alert if I started behind the camera and walked away from it. I wouldn’t receive an alert if I started from further away and walked towards the camera, either. Adjusting the motion detection sensitivity was enough to fix this. It's possible to adjust the brightness and tone of the spotlight, moving from a warm white to a cooler, starker tone. However, we were disappointed that you could set the light to illuminate for a longer period of time, seeing it double as a way to light the outside of your home as the Arlo Pro 4 does, for example. Alongside the spotlight, there’s a 980db siren, which can be triggered manually when viewing the live feed in a bid to deter any intruders.

The two-way communication function was quite clear and the built-in AI also proved to be excellent in terms of identifying people as they pass by. Sunlight each day is enough to continuously power SoloCam S40, so you never have to worry about changing the battery. When the sun sets, the built-in battery keeps the juice flowing. I've removed/re-added my detection zone a couple of times; doesn't seem to make a difference AND it catches people OUTSIDE of the zone. In fact, it's infuriating that it will "spot a person" on the sidewalk (outside the zone) but NOT myself or anyone else ON the driveway (IN the zone). In terms of the video, the clarity and level of detail captured by the S40 in its recordings is quite impressive. Having control over when and where a camera can record is important, and Eufy offers this through manually selectable modes, such as Home and Away. For each one, you can set whether your camera records and whether or not it sends you notifications. You can also set a schedule if you prefer. Modes work well enough, but you have to remember to handle them manually. With the Ring Spotlight Cam, you can choose whether it records based on the state of your Ring Alarm; the Arlo system provides geolocation for mode changes. We put the camera through heavy testing in a short period of time for this review, but located it in a position that easily achieved two hours of sunlight a day. The result was that our camera didn’t require charging manually at all during this time. However, battery life will depend on how often motion is detected, how many times the live feed is viewed, if the siren is triggered, and the number of times the two-way microphone and speaker are engaged. Being able to set up a camera and then almost forget that it is there in the first place has been a big perk of the wire-free design, though it is made even better by not having to worry about charging a battery in the first place. I’ve had no problems with keeping the eufy Solar SoloCam S40 where it resides on my patio, and the experience has made other strictly battery-powered offerings feel like half-measures by comparison. When I *think* it's just a connectivity issue, I open the app and try to start a live stream - it starts up almost instantly. In addition, that's also when I start to get a bunch of notifications. I know it only does "human" and "other" (I have all motion turned on), HOWEVER I get many many "person detected" notifications when there's no person in sight. I really wanted to like this camera, as it stored locally and made me believe that even if there was spotty connectivity to my WiFi any event would still be locally recorded and I could get to it.
