About this deal

This may not help you find your appendix, but it will show you curious organs, muscles and bones that I had no idea existed.

There are both permanent and special exhibitions, including the Broken Bodies, Suffering Spirits: Injury, Death, and Healing in Civil War Philadelphia. As someone who loved taking Anatomy and Physiology in college, I found it helpful to understand the origin of the various anatomical and physiological terminology.Anatomical Oddities explores the less-familiar realms of the body, unveiling the mysteries etched into the most outlandish landscapes hidden inside all of our crypts and caverns, gorges, islets, and mountains. The stunning, full-color illustrations lay bare the intricate details of the human body, the stories of people who unearthed its secrets, and the meanings of the words we use to describe it.

For example, gerontologists theorize that aging is caused, in part, by a combination of the molecular damage that inevitably arises from operating the machinery of life within cells and the imperfect mechanisms for molecular surveillance, maintenance and repair that permit damage to accumulate over time.

A quick hit of anatomy knowledge and one that’s written in a way that’s engaging, easy to read and not too arduous.

Professor Alice Roberts is an academic, author and broadcaster, specialising in human anatomy, physiology, evolution, archaeology and history. I especially loved how the author gives practical details to find the obscure body parts that she discusses, whenever possible, as well as fun anecdotes that explain their function better than a boring text. I read parts of this with a high school student and we agreed we were able to retain names after learning history and meaning far better than other methods. While its contents may resemble a mad scientist's funhouse, the museum's roots actually pay tribute to one of the most humane, respected, and talented surgeons in American history. It may not be a book that you’d want to read from cover to cover, although I did and enjoyed doing so, but, as you learn about each anatomical oddity, check out what this book has to offer and I’m sure you’ll appreciate it. On page 19, it says, "Even if you've never seen a real human skeleton", then proceeds to describe how bone is constructed. I would recommend Anatomical Oddities: The Otherworldly Realms Hidden within Our Bodies to anyone taking a college level course in anatomy.

The only thing I could have asked for is a bibliography or suggestions for further reading for those that would like to explore anatomy or the entomology of the related language further. It is written at a higher level than I expected though — it takes some prior anatomy knowledge to follow. The tools in this set were used for bloodletting, a medical practice used extensively in the United States until the mid 19th century to supposedly prevent or cure diseases. So many of the Grimms' fairy tales deal with the corporeal human body, whether dealing with sicknesses or a magical transformation or the various unpleasant things that can happen to the body," curator Anna Dhody tells The Metro West Daily News.I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. Roberts's engagingly personal style connects you to your ancestors, to your own personal beginnings as a single cell and, in a most attractive way, to herself as an author of great charm. This wide array of specimens would be what first populated the museum when it opened in 1863, just four years after his death from gout and lung disease. It is visually fun and with short self-contained entries, it can be skimmed or flipped through and start plenty of conversations when you have company. From your brain to your fingertips, you emerge from her book entertained and with a deeper understanding of yourself.
