At the start of this review, it was difficult to compare the Hohem iSTEADY V2 against the DJI OM4. OK, they’re both mobile gimbal stabilisers, both come in at the same price and essentially do the same job. But then who goes on looks alone? Possibly, the greater part of the buying public, especially when you look at the price of the iSTEADY V2 and compare it against the identical price, but better aesthetics, of the DJI OM4. The gimbal comes with a handy manual that clearly explains how to set it up. Please do not attempt to set it up without first seeing this booklet, as you may end up damaging the motors. I tested the iSteady V2 with an iPhone 8 Plus, an iPhone X, and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. On the whole, it provides excellent stabilization for almost any smartphone.The iSTEADY V2 is initially very similar, has mediocre build quality, minimal aesthetic product design, but it does fulfil the function of smoothing out handheld wobble etc. After the test, the Hohem iSTEADY V2 proved itself to be a very competent mobile gimbal stabiliser. My only reservation was the design aesthetics and built quality when compared against the DJI OM4. However, note that the motor may appear in the frame if your phone’s camera is too close to the central area. This is because the phone always needs to be centered within the clasp for the gimbal to function correctly. Since iPhones have cameras near the top of the phone, I did not face any issues with the motor appearing in my footage. Of course, you can also achieve all these functions with the physical buttons on the gimbal. Now that we are done with the basics, let’s understand how to use it! How to set up and use the Hohem iSteady V2 gimbal The app is completely optional, though it does add some nifty prebuilt “templates” for shooting like 360-degree panoramas and a “dolly zoom” shot amongst others. I like that the gimbal does not require the app for operation, this helps to get set up and shooting faster if you don’t need the app functionality. I found the app to be easy and intuitive to navigate, and the special shot modes were fun to try out.

Obviously, I was expecting the motion to be smoothed thanks to the motors and gyroscopes in the gimbal. However, I wasn't prepared for exactly how much jitter would be removed from the footage. Initially, the Hohem iSTEADY V2 looks much the same as its predecessor, which was a perfectly good stabiliser, although nothing much to get excited about.

Overall, the Hohem iSteady V2 is a gimbal that is great for those who are already vloggers or filmmakers as well as beginners aspiring to be one. The gimbal is easy to set up and lightweight enough to carry around conveniently. The accompanying app was flowered with useful tutorials that will help you along the way of things. However, the phone mounted and gimbal powered on, and it whirls to life with an assertiveness that I’m unfamiliar with for this size of gimbal. Additionally, if you worry that the gimbal will make loads of noise when it moves about, fret not. The gimbal makes use of a quiet and fan-less cooling solution equipped with an innovative double-column cooling system. This prevents the AI sensor from heating up and aids in its cooling so that it can work seamlessly throughout the day. This is the first mobile gimbal that I’ve used for a while, aside from the DJI OM4, that’s been 100% reliable. It just works. On our test, the AI vision sensor did a great job keeping the face centred in the frame. If you do selfie-style videos frequently, you’ll love that you don’t have to look at the phone to adjust the frame – the gimbal will do that automatically for you. As apps go, I’m highly impressed again with the ease of use. But, while all these features are good, I’m most impressed with the reliability. I wasn’t expecting much when I volunteered to review the Hohem iSteady V2 gimbal since my previous experience has been with much more expensive gimbals, but I found it to be surprisingly capable. I have happily added this to my adventure camera bag (I’m now lugging a DJI Mini 2 drone, this gimbal, the Akaso Brave 6 action camera, and a Canon M200 mirrorless camera). Stability is perhaps the most vital factor to look for in a gimbal, and iSteady V2 does not disappoint. It offers smooth footage for most circumstances. You can turn on the camera with the button that sits right above it. We were impressed that Hohem integrated dozens of components in the phone clamp without adding any extra weight and size.
