He sourced peat from the village of New Pitsligo, an hour east of Dufftown, and began experimenting with it in the Balvenie maltings. From new casks and inspiring landscapes, to experiments with recipes and royal roses, this series is a love letter to the people of the distillery that is written in whisky.The Week of Peat is inspired by the tradition, started in 2002, of distilling peated malt for only one week every year. Though there have been other The Week of Peat whiskies before, this is the first to be aged 17 years – three years longer than its peated predecessor. Aromas of raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices fill the nose, and the palate offers notes of dark chocolate, orange peel, banana, raisins and caramel. For a week a year, The Balvenie distils a batch of peated malt, resulting in a whisky rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness.

In 2002 Balvenie started using one week in the year to use peat in their malting kiln, as was common practice long ago, this spirit is kept for their limited releases.
