Finishing out the list are the pair of screwdrivers, one a wide flathead, useful for driving screws as well as prying, and a smaller pointed screwdriver, for Phillips head and smaller flathead screws. This is where the file is also found, on either side of the Phillips driver are a hatched, and double-hatched file, neither of which have been found to be useful. Gerber Dime (Joel Mason) How we tested the Gerber Dime The Squirt has that old-school Leatherman style that looks like it’s the first tool they came out with. Personally, I find it a bit on the boring side. The jaws have a flat and rounded section for grabbing anything. They both also have a small wire cutter at the bottom of the jaws which is strictly light-duty.

The Leatherman name carries a premium which is the only explanation I can come up with for such an expensive price, even though Gerber is so well known for their quality of tools and knives. The Gerber Dime doesn’t have a traditional multi tool bottle/can opener combo tool. Instead the body of the tool itself is shaped into a larger bottle opener that works quite well for its intended purpose.

You may be familiar with the Gerber Dime, the neat, mini keychain multi-tool with loads of useful every-day tools. Because of its small size the Gerber Dime doesn’t really have the traditional accessories a larger multi tool would have available. The only real choices available for it are the color and finish options.

The Dime, on the other hand, is contemporary with a rugged two-tone shell that looks more like a cutting-edge piece of gear. It’s plain to see that the file on the Leatherman is the better of the two. The grooves are fine, it’s long enough to actually be used to file something and it feels like a real tool. Some people also find an alternative model in the Gerver vise. This other model also includes 10 tools. It is very similar in essence. Both of these multi-tools can be handy in other ways too. I’ve used each to help disassemble larger items and perform various tasks around the house. They’ve also come in handy at work, turning the occasional bolt or screw. For superficial tasks, the Gerber and the Leatherman perform almost identically. EDC enthusiasts and people who already carry a full size multi tool will enjoy adding this to their daily carry. The Leatherman scissors were slightly better and got into the cardboard with less effort. Best Bottle Opener: Gerber Dime A. The base Gerber Dime is not technically approved, given the knife blades, but there is a separate Gerber Dime Travel, with many of the same features, that is approved. Q. How big is the Gerber Dime?Any attempt to snip metal will cause the jaws to deform, forcing you to use the wire itself to pry open the jaws. The Style PS is Leatherman’s TSA compliant multi tool. It has no blade and a much more basic tool loadout than the Dime, consisting of just pliers, tweezers, a pair of scissors, and a combination file cross driver. It also shares many of the same fail points as the Dime. In our previous review of the Style PS we were very impressed with its overall construction. The Gerber Dime vs. Leatherman Squirt PS4 has similar spring-loaded pliers that stay open when you aren’t applying pressure.

Pliers are an obvious necessity for a Gerber, and these itty bitty pliers actually do have quite a bit of utility. The point of the pliers meet up with a slight separation closer to the wide section intended for grabbing nuts, bolts, and other wide objects. There are also a pair of wire cutters built directly into the pliers, as found on most pliers nowadays. This isn’t intended to be your only multi tool. It’s meant to be the tool that you can bring with you no matter where you’re going. It’s small enough to fit on your keychain and light enough that you won’t even notice it’s there. Gerber offers the Dime in two versions and several different colors. Gerber Dime Tools Keep it close by on you keychain as you never know when it might come in handy with its copious amounts of useful tools. The brilliantly thought out tool selection solves many problems that may occur during travel and day to day life. The most ingenious of which is the evolutionary zipper hook, which attaches to and make opening a broken luggage zipper super easy. As well as a set of needle nose stainless steel pliers and wire cutters that elegantly butterfly open, theres a set of spring-loaded scissors, medium and small flat drivers, tweezers, a bottle opener that is exposed even when the tool is closed, and a fine and coarse file. Then we get to the tools themselves. Sure, the Dime has a couple more functions. But one of these is advertised as a “zipper puller.” Why would you go through the trouble of pulling out your multi-tool just to open a zipper?It also worked quite well on the same test but felt more flimsy and had a harder time cutting through plastic. Best File: Leatherman Squirt PS4 Both tools function exactly the same, with the blade, file, scissors, and screwdrivers placed on the outside, giving you a solid handle and grip when you need to use them.
