Woah. The aroma does NOT give you much insight into the palate of this Old Pulteney 15. It’s so much richer and fuller. Fruity, malty, and spicy. The spice is cinnamon heavy with bits of nutmeg sitting in there too. Vanilla and a light bit of dark sweets fill the gaps. They didn’t have the life, the character or the richness of OP’s age-stated whiskies. The OP Navigator was piss-poor compared to the standard Old Pulteney 12 years and the OP Clipper was a weak shade next to the always amazing Old Pulteney 17. Palate: Very nice flavor of smoky chocolate, with a immediate bite of spice, with a hint of fruit flavor, almost like dried dates. A very unique flavor, with the added brininess that seems to be a trademark of this distillery. The 15 Year Old is the middle rung in the Old Pulteney line up, and in my mind it fits that roll perfectly. It’s a lovely single malt, superbly balanced, and reasonably priced (even in America). However, the odd thing about the 15 Year Old is it isn’t what one might expect from Old Pulteney, having a character a step removed from most of what the distillery does and quite a bit removed from its nautically-themed image.

The distillery closed in 1930 due to declining trade after the local parish enforced prohibition laws but re-opened in 1951 when the vote was rescinded after the law was abolished. Old Pulteney 15 year old is really rather tasty, marrying fresh and crisp aromas and flavours with just enough sherry and just enough coast. It is a contemporary composition designed for a modern generation of whisky drinkers – solid but predictable, wood-forward, but yes, despite the heavy-handed marketing blurb, it is indeed balanced. I don’t like it as much as the 17 year old – it’s simply less characterful and more generic – but, I would still posit that that this new expression is a very different beast and will quite possibly, over time, have wider appeal.

Final Thoughts: Old Pulteney Huddart is a wonderfully smooth Scotch whisky. The flavors are light and goes down smoother than almost any other whisky I have had. This would be a perfect whisky to offer someone who has never had whiskey, or someone who has been on the fence about whiskey. The touch of briny flavor from the sea air adds a perfect touch that you won’t find in hardly any other whiskies.Nose: A very nice subtle smokiness, with slight hints of toffee, and honey, with a glimmer of green apple. The fundamental nature of maturing whisky – deliberately but unhurriedly over the years – reinforces a near monolithic link to the past. This can be positively appreciated by exploring processes and practices from decades past, or from experiencing bottlings now defunct that capture a particular moment. Time doesn’t stand still, and nor does whisky. But, all too often I’m seeing the past manifest itself in a binary belief that things were always better before – a view that in some instances may well be true, but one which will only lead to perpetual disappointment – and higher secondary market prices for the things which once were. Unfortunately, the OP 17 has been discontinued (and the OP 21 followed soon after), but in its place, this Old Pulteney 15 Years arrived. I’m 99% sure this will beat out either of the NAS attempts listed above, so I’ll be comparing it to the whisky it replaced.

Finish: Medium in length and combining creaminess with bitterness – latte coffee alongside steeped drying tea.

Old Pulteney Bow Wave veröffentlicht: 45-Jahre altes Unikat wird versteigert • CaptainScotch.de". CaptainScotch.de (in German). 14 July 2023 . Retrieved 14 July 2023. The finish flips the sweet and woody-earthy-spicy aspects of the whisky end over end, becoming far less sweet on the way down than the whisky was while sitting on your palate. It’s a nice capstone for the overall experience and really adds to it.

Palate: Very strong taste of spices when it hits your tongue. But there is a lingering sweetness to it, almost a dark chocolate and toffee hint. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Final Thoughts: While definitely not as smooth as the Huddart, Old Pulteney’s 12 year old single malt Scotch whiskey is wonderful and can definitely stand on its own, apart from the Huddart. The sea air brininess is even more apparent in this offering.Final Thoughts: The Old Pulteney 15 year old whisky definitely hits you right away with the spiciness. As the distillery states, this is a good balance of the spicy and the sweet. The spices hit you hard, but then the sweetness lingers on your tongue. This is a very unique flavor whiskey. The nose tells you that this isn’t what one should look out for in a Highland malt with a nautical theme. Instead of a saline aspect and perhaps a whiff of smoke, it’s a fruity malt. The scent is rich with green apples, raisins and citrus zest, sitting in a pool of honey and vanilla extract. Accenting this is a dash of baking spice, a sliver of dry wood, and a tinge of earthiness.
