Archived from the original on 20 September 2020 . Retrieved 28 February 2011.Having emerged as a concept roughly a century ago to more broadly describe the role sexuality plays in people’s lives, the meaning of pansexuality has shifted significantly over the years. It’s surfaced more recently in popular culture, with celebrities like singer-songwriter Janelle Monae using it to describe their sexual orientations. I know that now, because by Miley bringing the word to my attention, I began to understand that it might better describe my sexuality having previously identified as bisexual. But in a world that refuses to learn more about the many tangents of the LGBTQ+ community, the stigma around being pansexual has often kept me from feeling safe to use the term in conversation. What does ‘pansexual’ mean?

A person’s romantic orientation relates to how they feel romantically — but not necessarily sexually — toward others. Sexual fluidity is different from gender fluidity. Sexual fluidity is a concept that describes how a person's sexual identity may shift, and can shift at any time. [33] The American Institute of Bisexuality stated that the term fluid "expresses the fact that the balance of a person's homosexual and heterosexual attractions exists in a state of flux and changes over time." [30] The pansexual colors from the pride flag all have different meanings, pink meaning attraction to fem presenting people, blue attraction to masculine presenting people, and yellow for people (for an example) of a non-binary gender, such as agender, bigender or genderfluid. Around the same time, Eaves, who uses ‘they/them’ pronouns, was also realising that their gender identity was non-binary (in other words, not female or male). For them, that realisation went hand-in-hand with identifying as pansexual. “I feel like my gender changes, [and] because of that I’ve been able to think of more things as a spectrum,” they explain. “It allowed me to get out of the binaries that, in US culture, we’re kind of indoctrinated into.” While de-emphasising the role of gender in attraction and relationships lies at the core of pansexuality, there are some nuances to what it means for pansexual folks in practice. This is similar to omnisexuality, which has a similar meaning. Some people use “omnisexual” and “pansexual” interchangeably. However, some people argue that they are different because omnisexuality does not involve “gender blindness.” The term pansexual is, in fact, not a new term. The word has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary since at least the early 1900s, and has been used in its current definition since at least the late 1960s. While LGBTQ+ people have long been using a range of different terms to describe their identities, we’re simply more aware of them now due to increasing social acceptance, as well as access to diverse experiences through the internet and social media. a b c d e f g Eisner, Shiri (2013). Another misconception is that bisexual and pansexual people are non-monogamous, or are attracted to everyone, Dallara and Miller explain. “Just like straight and gay people, bisexual and pansexual people have certain people they are attracted to and others they aren’t. It’s the possibility of attraction, not the guarantee,” Miller says.

Gray Stripe: People who identify as gray-asexual and demi-asexual (people who fall between asexuality and sexuality) This straightforwardness has also been a boon for Eaves’s partners. Because Eaves doesn’t date people based on their gender, it gives the people they date more space to explore their own gender identities – they don’t feel pressure to remain static to fit into Eaves’s parameters of attraction. “It doesn’t feel threatening [for them],” says Eaves, “to consider their identity might not be what they defaulted to for a long time.” Morandini, James S.; Blaszczynski, Alexander; Dar-Nimrod, Ilan (2017). "Who Adopts Queer and Pansexual Sexual Identities?". The Journal of Sex Research. 54 (7): 911–922. doi: 10.1080/00224499.2016.1249332. ISSN 0022-4499. PMID 27911091. S2CID 5113284. This pink, purple, white, and blue Pride flag represents different gender identities, with the white stripe in the middle inspired by the Transgender Pride Flag.

Pansexuality is the sexual or romantic attraction towards people, regardless of their sex or gender. “This term is sometimes specifically used to be inclusive of attraction to individuals across the gender spectrum,” Keygan Miller, Public Training Manager for The Trevor Project, says. What does it mean to be bisexual? The pansexual flag is a bright pink, yellow and cyan flag. It was made as a symbol for the pansexual community to increase its visibility and recognition. Many people still disagree on what the basic concepts of gender and sexual identity mean.
